Meet the Ricard Family
Louis Ricard takes great pride in raising Ecocert Canada Certified organic eggs from his 15,000 laying hens in St-Alexis, Lanaudière, just outside of Montréal Québec. He and his wife Claude are also raising 5 children – Sylvain (22), Danny (21), Andre-Anne (17) and twin sisters Sabrina and Melissa who are 15.

Louis is a third generation farmer and has been farming for 30 years. In addition to the hens, Louis farms 270 acres of organically certified crops. Forty percent of the crops are used directly on the farm to feed the hens. The other 60% are sold for human consumption, including bread wheat and soybeans that are exported to Japan for Tofu.

When he's not farming, Louis loves to travel, both for recreation and for work. He and his two sons Sylvain and Danny travelled to Brazil to learn organic production techniques from their farmers. He also volunteers in several capacities. He is a member of L'Union des producteurs agricoles and is president of the Zone Lanaudière chapter. He is also a director on the board of the Antique Tractor Pull in St-Alexis.

Andre-Anne is following in her father's volunteer footsteps, already volunteering at a home for people with disabilities and may consider this type of work when she finishes school.

"I'm happy to be an egg producer," says Louis. "I'm most proud of being able to feed my birds with home-grown organic grains and provide consumers with safe, nutritious and affordable eggs."
